A few years ago, I logged in to an old “Hotmail.com” account. There was a section where you could find the date the account was created. I had registered NuAngel@Hotmail.com on February 8th, 1999. I know I had used the name for a few weeks prior to that, but on services like ICQ, where a name could change whenever you wanted it too – your unique ID was a long number – your nickname was just a preference in your profile.
Hotmail was the first place I remember registering the name, thinking, “I like this name, I think I’m going to keep it.”
Five years ago, I made a post about how I have used the same name online for 13 years. Two years ago, I wrote about what the name meant to me. And today, marking 18 years of using the same online handle, I’m still happy to be known the world over – perhaps in small pockets, but it’s a very surreal feeling to have people “recognize you” by a “fake name” you use on the internet.
I have no legal claim to the name, I have no trademarks, and I’ve said before I’m very aware that there is a pre-existing “NuAngel, Inc.” out there in the world. But I don’t think I’m stepping on anyone’s toes – I travel in very different circles from the other company, and I’ve done my best to be an upstanding citizen of the internet (remember when “netizens” was a word people used?). At the end of the day, I just can’t see myself adopting any other name any time soon. Call me a geek if you want, I’ll own it!
I’ve launched yet another web property, because I’m not busy enough in my life! 🙂 Coming soon, TheWindowsUpdate.com. Right now I just have a bunch of placeholder stuff up on the site, but soon I’ll be putting some real content up, I may even import many of the Windows-related tech support articles from this site. Mostly, I intend for The Windows Update to just cover the major news highlights that come from Microsoft HQ and offer some personal commentary on the latest news regarding Windows, Xbox, HoloLens, Surface, Office, Outlook, and other products! So visit the new site when you get a chance and if you’re looking for any kind of news from Microsoft, take a look at TheWindowsUpdate.com!
Video games draw eye rolls and exasperated sighs from many people. Many of those people play more video games than they like to admit. But because Candy Crush, or Clash of Clans, or Pokemon Go doesn’t require them to hold a controller in front of a TV, “it’s different” or “it doesn’t count.” But for someone like me, video games are an integral part of my life.
People have looked at the tattoo on my arm and said to me “why would you get something stupid like that? Tattoos are supposed to mean something to you.” First, tell that to the guy with the barbed wire on his arm, or ask the other dude what “tribe” exactly he is representing with his ink? Second, to respond directly to the people telling me my tattoo doesn’t have meaning: you don’t know me very well. Let me explain. Continue reading “It’s more than a video game to me…”
I must be crazy. I feel like I have no free time, and my stress levels keep creeping up. But I’ve decided to learn a thing or two about editing video, and have finally gotten moving on a “YouTube project” I’ve talked about for a long time! I will provide YouTube links when I get closer to the full launch, but TODAY you can check out the teaser video for Our Story So Far!
Episodes 1-4 to launch on January 1st, then a new episode every other Friday. Current plan is to do at least 13 episodes before taking a break of any kind. But I’m new at the whole process. Please be gentle for any delays. I promise, I’m trying my best! Follow @NuAngel on Twitter, or OurStorySoFar.tv for the latest updates.
