Change Default Word 2007 2010 DOCX icon

docx

Updated based on user feedback:

Ever see the icon above and asked “Help, my default DOCX icon has changed to something ugly! How do I solve this?”  If not, you’ve had good luck so far.  But some day you might, so commit this one to memory.

I had to deal with this issue on my girlfriend’s laptop just last month.  The DOCX icon had been replaced with this ugly icon.  Something had gone wrong with the file association, as well, but I had fixed that – still, the icon stayed.  I tried to edit literally DOZENS of Registry Keys, DWord Values, and expanding size entries…  I added things to my registry that weren’t there, changed the ones that were there, and rebooted dozens of times.  What finally fixed it?  Frustratingly simple.

Change the file association for .DOCX files to open with WordPad instead of MSWord (that’s where the ugly icon came from) – then set it back to MSWord.  Here’s how to do it:

docx_openwith

  1. Right click the file, mouse over the “Open With” option at the bottom of the list of programs, click “Choose Default Program.”
  2. Select “WordPad” and hit OK.
  3. Once applied, open the menu back up, and now double click the Microsoft Office Word icon. The file should open with Word, then when you close it you’ll see the icon!

Hope this helps someone out there, some day!

Music Monday– 2009 – One eskimO self titled

one_eskimo_cover

Available in vanilla and deluxe, the 2009 album from band One eskimO only showed up on my radar this year.  But I’m guessing by the end of this summer it will be on more people’s radar.  Want proof?  My money says you’ll recognize the song Kandi if you give it a listen, and if your can’t stop yourself from singing along, then I suggest you check out the entire album.  Several very strong tracks offer catchy hooks, but with a very rare lyrical substance.

The songs really strike at your core, and there is a reason the band has been placing the track Kandi on every sampler and demo they’ve put out since 2004.  The oldest things I’ve been able to get ahold of are all from right around the same time, but they may be different recording sessions or just different mixes of the same recordings.  Still, the band sounds consistent. They have a style that they don’t want to step away from, no matter what the record labels want them to do.  Enjoy the genuine sound while it exists, and here’s hoping the get the recognition they deserve before their next album where they have to make something radio-friendly and poppy.  If it does happen?  We’ll always have their self-titled “debut” album.

Resetting the Xbox 360's video display settings to default

Have you ever turned on the Xbox 360 and been able to hear it but not see it?  Maybe you were tinkering with video options in the Settings menu, or maybe you were at a friend’s house and had your Xbox hooked up differently than normal and when you brought it home, no dice.  Whatever the cause, if you can hear the dashboard sound effects or whatever game is in the tray, but not see the screen, the solution is simple!

First, remove any games from the console, then make sure the Xbox 360 is completely off.  Then, on the controller you’re going to turn the console on from, press and hold the "Y" button while pulling the RIGHT TRIGGER (not the right "Bumper" or shoulder button – the trigger down below).  Now press the Guide Button on your controller to turn on the 360 (you can release that button once the system starts to turn on).  Keep holding both the Right Trigger and the "Y" button down, even through the startup sounds and when you hear dashboard sound effects.  After a while the screen will flicker and video will reset to the out-of-the-box low resolution defaults, and from there you can customize your settings again!

That’s your Xbox tip of the week for our first week back.  I hope someone out there, some day, finds it useful!

New Blog Format

Here’s what to expect in the very near future:

Sunday – Xbox Tip of the Week – while this could change, I plan on making it a brief, weekly post with some useful information I’ve picked up during my time as an Xbox Ambassador.  Think of it as an FAQ from users, with a new question being answered week to week.

Monday – Music Monday – each week, something new or something old, but undoubtedly something you should hear.

Tuesday – Tips from the Help Desk – If you didn’t know, my full time job for the past several years has been “IT Guy.”  These are the tips, some for general users, some for the more advanced, but all useful tips I have gleaned solely from my time having to figure them out in the past.

Wednesday – App of the Week – As an Android user, there are tons of Apps to choose from.  I’ll make it simple and give you a weekly recommendation of something you should check out.  Whether it’s a utility to make your life easier or a game, each Wednesday you can look forward to downloading and playing with something new!

Thursday – Random Thought Thursday – This could get dangerous, folks.  But Thursdays will be reserved for typically my most personal of thoughts, opinions, whatever.  These could also appear from time to time on their own, but Thursday will typically be where I discuss some news from the week and try not to bore you to tears.

Friday – Frag Friday – Let’s roll in to the weekend the right way: video gaming tips and news!  A little bit of what I’ve been playing, what I’m looking forward to, and other grumblings from the underground of gaming.

Saturday – Video of the week – you’ve got to see this.  It might be funny, it might be fascinating, but it will be the video of the week.
