I was in an accident

So, about those new videos…

I had intended to put out new episodes of Our Story So Far TV on a regular basis. I had built up a back log of titles that I thought would make good episodes. You may have even noticed some OTHER videos I had put out recently, such as installing saddlebags on my motorcycle.

Well, six days after I recorded that video, I ended up crashing that motorcycle. Thankfully, for the most part, I walked away from the crash. It was simply a matter of losing the bike on loose gravel, grabbing a fist-full of front brake rather than stabilizing myself with the rear brake… all mistakes I knew I had made right when they happened. Regardless, I went down, got some road rash, knocked a few ribs out of place, and broke a thumb.

It’s called a “Rolando Fracture”

That all happened on August 10th. On August 20th, I had “surgery” on my thumb. Luckily, they were able to put the thumb in traction and everything seems to have fallen back in to place on its own. Then they put a couple of pins in to keep everything in place. On the 22nd, I had a cast put on, then on September 19th, it was removed – as were the pins.

Now I’m in a splint for a few weeks and I won’t be able to start real physical therapy until October 3rd at the soonest. Right now I’m doing very minor exercises and stretches to regain some motion and mobility, but not rebuilding muscle.

It didn’t look all that bad, but they ended up totaling the bike. I’m guessing there was some damage inside the transmission, but it doesn’t matter now. They totaled it out, and I’ll have to be in the market for a new bike… eventually. I haven’t been scared off, I intend to get back on the steel horse – but it’s going to be a little while.

Right now I don’t have much forward motion in my thumb (abduction & opposition). Which means I can’t grip a throttle on a motorcycle, I can’t press buttons on a video game controller, and I can’t handle a mouse very accurately with my right hand – which makes editing video exceedingly difficult. This should heal over time with proper therapy and a bit of patience, but I’m certainly not there yet.

All things considered an accident like this could’ve been much worse. I’m happy to report I was wearing a helmet and that it did its job to protect me from having my face scrape up pretty badly. I doubt it would have been the sort of impact that would’ve killed me, but road rash on my face doesn’t sound all that appealing.

So that’s why there haven’t been any new episodes of Our Story So Far TV, or much of anything happening on here in the last month and a half.
